Public Realm
The City of London is working to reimagine Smithfield as a pedestrian-friendly destination, which invites people to explore the rich heritage of the area. The project will support the aspirations of Culture Mile and the City Transport Strategy, as well as aligning with the initial concept designs being produced should the meat market move and the relocation of the Museum of London to the area.
A team of consultants lead by Hawkins\Brown Architects are currently working on a concept design for the public spaces in Smithfield. This project is being developed closely with the market building concept designs as we see the transformation of these spaces as one.
The aims of the public realm project are to:
Celebrate the history of the area
Increase planting, greening and sustainable measures
Design a ‘Healthy Streets’ approach to transport and movement, which prioritises people over vehicles
Provide facilities for cultural activity to take place
Support local communities and businesses
