City Corporation begins public consultation on Reserved Matters Application

CGI of the new market at Dagenham Dock
The City of London Corporation received planning permission to relocate its historic markets to a new home in Dagenham Dock in March 2022. We are now seeking to take the next step by bringing forward a Reserved Matters Application (RMA) which will address matters such as access, appearance, landscaping, layout and scale of proposed development. The RMA will then be considered by BeFirst, Barking and Dagenham’s planning authority.

After a lengthy process of review and through discussion with traders, it became clear that New Spitalfields market, as the newest of the existing markets, has a much longer operational life than at Smithfield and Billingsgate, because of its considerably better condition, its strong transport connections and because it offers more room for expansion.

Therefore, whilst the City Corporation retains an ambition to relocate New Spitalfields at a later date, the RMA and its public consultation will pertain to Smithfield and Billingsgate co-locating onto a single site in Dagenham Dock.
